About EDT (Essential Driver Training)

Essential Driver Training (EDT) is the RSA's structured training programme for learner car drivers. It is 12 one-hour sessions with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), and by law only an ADI can deliver it.

  • The RSA recommends leaving about two weeks between sessions and spreading the course over six months.
  • Between sessions, practise what you've learned with a sponsor if you have one (someone who has held a full licence for at least two years).
  • If you hold a foreign licence you may be eligible for reduced EDT: six sessions instead of 12.
  • Your progress is recorded in your EDT logbook and on the RSA's MyEDT service.

Full details are on the RSA's EDT page.
