Lessons & EDT
What is EDT?
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is the RSA's structured training programme for learner car drivers. It is 12 one-hour sessions with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), and by law only an ADI can deliver it.
If you got your first learner permit on or after 4 April 2011, you need to complete EDT before you can sit your driving test. Each session is recorded in your EDT logbook and on the RSA's MyEDT portal.
Full details are on the RSA's EDT page.
How often should I have lessons?
The RSA recommends leaving about two weeks between EDT sessions, so you have time to practise what you've learned, and spreading the course over six months. See the RSA's EDT page.
Can I practise between lessons?
Yes. Between sessions, practise what you've learned with a sponsor if you have one (someone who has held a full licence for at least two years). Having a sponsor isn't compulsory.
I have a foreign licence: do I need all 12?
Maybe not. If you hold a licence from a country that doesn't have a licence exchange agreement with Ireland, you may be eligible for reduced EDT: 6 sessions instead of 12. Check the RSA's reduced EDT page to see if it applies to you.
Booking & your first lesson
How do I book?
Call 083 139 2174 or send a WhatsApp (opens WhatsApp), or send a request with the booking form. We'll check availability in your area and find a time that suits you.
What do I bring to my first lesson?
Bring your learner permit. The RSA says you must carry it with you at all times while driving, and your instructor checks it at each EDT session (see the RSA's learner permit page).
If your permit has code 01, you must wear glasses or contact lenses to drive, so bring them.
Your instructor gives you your EDT logbook and stamps it at each session, so keep it safe and bring it every time.
